Established in 1872, Napier Boys’ High School remains one of New Zealand’s oldest and most successful state schools. A large school we are able to offer a significant range of subjects and experiences that enhance boys’ learning, independence and self-management in and out of class.

Our classes and experiences are varied, from engineering or viticulture to a very unique Earth and Space Science programme utilising our onsite Holt Planetarium. A strong sporting school, in the past four years we have had over sixty students play sport for New Zealand.

Napier Boys’ High School is located in the beautiful city of Napier, New Zealand, beside the Pacific Ocean. Living in Napier is a unique experience. It is a city known for its climate and beauty. Napier’s architecture and natural setting make it an extremely popular tourist destination. We are a 45 minute flight from Auckland.

The school is set on a 30 hectare site, two minutes to the beach. Unique features include our own winery, onsite boarding for 190 students, farm, large swimming complex and all weather tennis / hockey facilities and Planetarium.

We have been accepting international students since the 1990s. We offer a boutique international programme. We tailor or personalise the programme to meet the goals and needs of the individual student, whether it is short or long-term stay. Our popular PLUS outdoor package for international students takes advantage of our beautiful climate and access to the outdoors.

What makes us unique?

Our international programme is very unique. We like to meet with potential students and families before they arrive in New Zealand. In this way we are able to understand their interests, needs and goals, making the students journey a shared experience.

With four dedicated staff in the international department we provide exceptional care and management of our international students, ensuring they are engaged and active in and out of the classroom. Our school offers a significant range of classes and experiences. We challenge our international students to try new subjects and activities. In this way our international students become ‘kiwi boys’ so quickly.

Sports, Activities & Trips

As a large boys’ school we are able to offer a range of sporting and cultural experiences. We expect our international students to join a sport or cultural activity. This is a great way to make new friends in and out of school. Sports are organised through school. Students do have the option of joining a club outside of school too.

We repeat our popular PLUS outdoor programme for students not completing the NCEA examinations.

Our popular +PLUS programme offers a wide range of outdoor and cultural experiences. We take advantage of the beautiful and world-famous Hawke’s Bay summer and landscape. This is the real New Zealand! Activities include surfing lessons, white-water rafting, black-water rafting, Tongiriro Crossing, paddle-boarding, paintball and a visit to Rotorua, Gisborne or Wellington. We expect our students to complete a service component too. We look to place students into organisations that fit with the international student’s interests.

Year Planner

International students can join the school at any time during the school year. The main intakes are late January and July. This coincides with our Term 1 and Term 3.

We expect our international students to become involved in the wider life of the school. Joining a club, sport or activity is an important part of ‘belonging’ to Napier Boys’ High School. Also, it is a great way to develop your English skills and meet new friends.

We offer a range of activities for all skill levels. Our first teams perform at the highest level. In the past four years we have had over 60 students play sport for New Zealand. But, we also have teams organised at a social level with the emphasis more on fun and friendship.
