Otago Boys High School has an international reputation for academic excellence, sport and cultural activities.
Previous German students at the school have commented that what makes this school unique is the friendly nature of students available to talk to and socialise with as well as play sport with.
Coming to New Zealand I wanted to focus on my favourite sport of golf, instead my focus shifted and I tried out other sports, which at home for me would not have been possible of accessible. The school sports teams and the Outdoor Education course provided me with the challenges and options I had never thought of doing before.

What makes us unique?
Established in 1863, the school is one of the oldest in the country and although this is reflected still in the beauty of its buildings, the school is modern in its approach. Previous students of the school include world renowned sportspeople as well as national figures in politics and business.
Student teacher relationships are very important in the success of the school so you will find the teachers are approachable and genuinely interested in you as a international student.
In Outdoor Education, which is a very unique subject, we went to nearby places such as Ross Creek, the Redwoods or the beach. I really liked having the opportunity to go mountain biking, hiking and surfing all within the city of Dunedin. I also liked the staff at Otago Boys’ as they were helpful and often smiled. My classmates were often really funny but still focused on their work.

Outdoor Education is a subject that can be taken for approximately 4 hours per week at years 12 and 13. This is popular and allows you to experience life outside in New Zealand’s great outdoors – surfing, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding etc.
