New Plymouth Girls’ High School has shaped and influenced the lives of young women since 1885. With over a century of tradition since its foundation, New Plymouth Girls’ High School provides students with the technical and personal skills needed for life in the 21st century whilst retaining traditional values and pride in our heritage.
The school is set in 11 hectares of beautiful grounds. There are excellent facilities to provide instruction in all aspects of the New Zealand curriculum in both classrooms, gymnasia, playing fields and specialist rooms.
We have a proud tradition of academic excellence and a proven record of outstanding achievement in sport, visual, and performing arts. Our students consistently achieve above the national average and comparative schools in national qualifications
The success of the students is in large a measure attributable to the skills and dedication of our highly qualified teaching staff who take great pride in the students’ successes in all fields of endeavour.

What makes us unique?
Our school is based on traditional values with innovative approaches to teaching and learning supported by modern information communication technology. We are living in a fast-paced and dynamic world. We need to be innovative and keep pace with change whilst holding on to the values and traditions we all hold dear.
We do need to consider what our vision may mean for our young women in this rapidly changing world. Relationships are at the centre of our philosophy – positive, supportive, collaborative relationships. Together we can achieve so much and have achieved so much.
Our school offers a safe, positive learning environment where students are able to learn, work, grow, and achieve to the best of their ability.
Sports, Activities & Trips
The school is set in attractive spacious grounds by the beach in the heart of the city and just 30 minutes drive from the beautiful mountain. The district has a reputation as an event centre with major festivals, sporting fixtures and concerts that attract international attention.
Our school has a wide range of extra-curricular sporting and cultural activities offered. High achievement nationally in all areas. Sport, Music, Art, Dance and Drama are “Centres of Excellence” in the school.
We have affiliations with Outdoor Education Companies, and have many trips throughout the year. Sports teams travel and play all over the country – there is something for everyone at our School!

End of Year Programme
Our students have a special programme for the end of the year. This includes lots of activities (surfing, sight seeing, flax weaving, museum visits, arts visits) plus some intense ESOL teaching. The students can choose areas that they want to focus on and our teachers help them with this. Our end of year programme is fun, and the girls love every minute of it!
