St Andrew’s College is a leading independent, co-educational day and boarding school, offering a dynamic curriculum and a world-class learning environment. We aim to inspire and support our students to achieve their full potential and leave us as confident, well-rounded young adults, who are prepared for life in today’s rapidly-changing world.

Our large, picturesque campus, established in 1917 on Presbyterian principles, comprises four distinct learning centres – a Pre-school, Preparatory School, Middle School and Senior College, facilitating seamless transitions from Pre-school to Year 13. Blending a compelling mix of the traditional, contemporary and visionary, St Andrew’s College provides diverse opportunities for students to excel and showcase their talents.

St Andrew’s College is proud to be the only independent school in the South Island offering Pre-school to Year 13 education for both boys and girls.

Hello! My name is Dunyachut, but everyone just calls me Rocky. I started at St Andrew’s in year 9 and have been here for 5 years, so I’m in year 13 now.
When I first arrived here, it was very intimidating, everything was so different.
But now that I’ve developed my English and my confidence a lot more, it’s been really good!
St Andrew’s has so many options for sports, the long list is frightening! At the moment I really enjoy playing Badminton and in summer I concentrate on drama production, which helped boost my confidence even more. I’m not as shy as I used to be anymore.
My advice is: Just don’t be afraid to do new things and meet new people. It’ll all work out!

What makes us unique?

As an independent school, we have more freedom than a state school to explore innovative approaches to learning for a fast-changing world, tailoring our teaching to bring out the best in each student. We have our own independent board, we are not dependent on government or church funds, and funding is mainly through tuition.

St Andrew’s College has one of the largest school campuses in Christchurch, with state-of the-art teaching and learning centres, and impressive cultural and sports facilities, spread across a spacious 13-hectare site on Papanui Road in the heart of the city.

We warmly welcome international students, offering a world-class education in a safe and supportive community. With a diverse representation from over 20 countries, the international programme fosters a rich and balanced curriculum.
At St Andrew’s, international students engage in a mix of sports, cultural events, service, and leadership activities, immersing themselves in New Zealand’s unique culture. They also experience the traditions of our Scottish Presbyterian heritage at special events. Encouraged to participate in various activities, international students create lasting memories, forming global friendships with Kiwi peers. As a result, international students leave us as well-rounded young adults, who are prepared for higher education, exciting career opportunities, and life in today’s rapidly-changing world.

STAC is a really amazing school! Not only is it co-ed, but also a boarding school and has a really old culture. There are so many different options here, wether it be in sports and science, workshops like wood, textile or food, or extra-curricular subjects like Dance, Production, Theatre, or Film. So you can try whatever you want to do, you just need to take the opportunities!
And the people here are just so friendly and caring and want to get to know you. I really value the kindness of the people here.
It’s truly the best school and also a home away from home. You won’t regret staying here!

Sports, Activities & Trips

We believe that co-curricular activity is integral to a young person’s development. St Andrew’s offers an exceptional range of sporting, recreational, musical, and other performance opportunities to our students, ensuring they can discover their potential, explore their interests, express their talents, and strive for excellence in their activity of choice.

Students at St Andrew’s College continue a rich and varied sporting tradition. From Years 4–12 they participate in a sport and/or cultural activity each week, during both the summer and winter terms. Students also have the opportunity to attend inter-school competitions at local, regional, national and sometimes international level. Many of our top sports teams achieve outstanding success in regular national competitions.
The Secondary School provides an extensive array of sporting opportunities for students. Our sports programme is directed by our Director of Sport and Co-curricular activities, who ensures it reflects current trends, meets the needs of students, and provides pathways for those students who want to achieve at the highest possible level.

Additionally, students can participate in everything from speech and drama, to dance, Highland dance, ballet and music. Professional tuition in singing and a wide range of instruments is offered, with the opportunity for students to join our jazz and concert bands, choirs, barbershop groups, chamber groups, rock bands, and our internationally acclaimed Pipe Band.

St Andrew’s College is also fortunate to have the only professional production studio and control room complex in a New Zealand secondary school. Here, students can conceive, plan, rehearse, and execute full-fledged television productions without leaving campus.

And finally, our Education Outside the Classroom programme (EOTC) has an outstanding reputation for delivering high-quality experiences. By providing our students with real-life, hands-on experiences and activities, it helps to grow their confidence and self-esteem. Stepping outside of the classroom is a great way to learn more about themselves, discover new interests, create strong friendships, develop leadership skills, develop outdoor skills, and enrich and integrate academic disciplines.
